Opening Ceremony of the Shine Skills Centre (Kwun Tong) – Oxford Road Re-provisioned Campus
To tie in with the Kwun Tong "Government, Institution or Community" composite development project, the previous building of Shine Skills Centre (Kwun Tong) ("SSC (Kwun Tong)"), which was established more than a half-century ago, has been returned to the Government. Trainees enrolled in the SSC (Kwun Tong) has started their new terms at the Oxford Road Re-provisioned Campus. An opening ceremony of the SSC (Kwun Tong) – Oxford Road Re-provisioned Campus held on 7 October 2022 was officiated by Mr Chris Sun, JP, the Secretary for Labor and Welfare. Together with other guests and staff, we witnessed a milestone of the development in vocational training for people with disabilities.
At the Opening Ceremony, Mr Tony TAI Chark-tong, the Council Chairman, thanked the teaching team for assisting students to familiarize themselves with the new environment. Ways of learning and teaching changed dramatically during the COVID-19 pandemic with the distinctive rise of e-learning. The Oxford Road Re-provisioned Campus is equipped with computer devices and related equipment such as touchable interactive whiteboards, all-in-one computers and wireless network to facilitate teachers adopting different teaching strategies in order to improve students' learning performance. The new facilities also provide better space utilization in the campus. Besides, well-equipped trade-specific simulated workshops provide employment-oriented training which enables students to acquire relevant skills more easily.
On the same occasion, Mr Chris Sun, JP, the Secretary for Labour and Welfare said that the school premise would house more than 300 students for the coming five years. The programmes equip the students with essential independent living skills and employment potential and thereby help integrate them into the society. Mr Sun also believes that everybody has talents in some ways and can continue improving everyday to become a better self.
The student representative of Shine Skills Centre presented a String Art souvenir to the officiating guest at the ceremony. The unique artwork is made by text pattern with colored thread strings by the Shine students and graduates. The artwork symbolizes the personal development of students. The path of life may keep crisscrossing, if you walk towards the goal steadily and continuously, you can make yourself a beautiful and shine life.
The guests were arranged to visit a number of specialised teaching facilities of SSC (Kwun Tong) and talk with teaching staff and students to understand how the vocational training unleashed the potential of disabled people.
