What is Shine Skills Centre?
Shine Skills Centre (referred to as “SSC”) is a member of the VTC Group which offers vocational training, rehabilitation and professional support services to people aged 15 and above who have special educational needs to develop their employment potential. There are three offerring sites of Shine Skills Centre: SSC (Kwun Tong) – Oxford Road Re-provisioned Campus, SSC (Tuen Mun) and SSC (Pokfulam).
What types of students with special educational needs would SSC provide the vocational training?
Students with special educational needs have learning difficulties in one way or others, thus special educational support is essential for them. SSC provides vocational training to them (including attention deficit / hyperactivity disorder, autism, hearing impairment, intellectual disability, physical disability, mental illness, specific learning difficulties, speech impairment, visceral disability, visual impairment).
What types of training would SSC provide to students?
SSC offers full-time vocational training programmes, covering business, information technology and service streams in order to assist students to develop their skills, unleash their potential and enhance their employability. At the same time, SSC provides life planning education for students to understand their own interests and abilities so as to choose the suitable jobs. Besides, students will be arranged to participate in the industrial attachment related to their trainings. Student Counsellors will also conduct various workshops and activities to enhance their skills and abilities on sustainable social interaction, teamwork, self-control, communication and problem solving.
What is the industrial attachment programme and who would be the student participants?
SSC is dedicated to forging partnership with industries to arrange industrial attachment opportunities for students in order to enhance and develop their vocational skills, confidence, good work habits, positive work attitudes, understanding of the current business environment, adaptation to actual job requirements and employers' expectations. Students participating in the program have completed relevant vocational skills training and are equipped with right working attitudes, as well as understanding on relevant job skills. Employers are also encouraged to offer attachment opportunities to our students which could in turn provide an effective channel for employers to source and select suitable employees.
Does a company need to sign the employment contract with students and pay salary? Does Mandatory Provident Fund (MPF) apply?
Student attachment is generally not a formal employment, thus employment contract is not necessary and MPF Ordinance does not apply. However, the company is encouraged to give allowance to cover students' basic expenses, and, if the students have completed the job satisfactorily, provide a testimonial specifying their work and performance during the attachment period to them.
How can a company offer an attachment opportunity?
The company can simply contact the respective Student Counsellor(s) by specifying the requirements. They will then help identify appropriate student candidates to match the needs, arrange interview and follow through the attachment period.
What does a company need to prepare / points to note if it does not have the experiences to employ the people with disabilities?
Students have completed relevant vocational skills training and are equipped with right work attitudes, as well as understanding on relevant job skills. The company is suggested to use simple wordings when talking with students and put efforts in listening with patience. The company could also contact our Student Counsellors if encountering problems.
What are the tips for a company when working with the students / graduates?
In order to perform the work effectively, employers, supervisors or working partners could set the work schedule, provide direct instruction, repeat the job requirements and standards, as well as demonstrate the work procedures to the students / graduates. Employers are also encouraged to keep close contact with our Student Counsellors who will provide timely employment counseling and support for job preparedness.
What is employment support services?
The Centre will provide employment support services to the students who are undergoing attachments / trials. Student Counsellors will identify industrial attachment / employment opportunities for students based on their personal profiles such as experiences, skills, personalities and employment intentions. During the attachment / trial employment period, they will continue to work with the employers to look at students' needs and help them solve the problems for setting in.
Is there any charge on the employers’ support service?
Our services offered are free of charge. We hope employers could provide attachment and employment opportunities to our students so as to leverage their strengths and help them integrate into the community.
